An informational parent session was held at the Port Arthur ISD Administration Building. Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Melvin Getwood opened the meeting with a greeting followed by this greeting in Spanish by Mr. Ricardo Celis.  Community member and volunteer, Mrs. Gzelle Clark did the roll call to check on which schools had representatives in attendance. Dr. LaWanda Finney introduced the dynamic, innovative  and brilliant guest speaker; the Superintendent of the Port Arthur Schools, Dr. Mark Porterie!

Dr. Porterie discussed:
-The value of parents, grandparents, guardians and community partnerships.
-The A-F ratings of our schools 
-New adoption HMH fo K-8, 9-12 adoption for the next school year and where we are presently with our curriculum.
-We have sold the last 50M in bonds and other plans for the funds
-He constantly emphasized partnerships and that we can do this job with them.
-He mentioned that there are standards that we must adhere to and we have to embrace out students with these standards
-He mentioned that "In order for our students to move forward a culture of success has to be formed. Success has to come from the school and home We have to be on one accord when it comes to the student's success."
-Without an education, a student today is limited.
-He  spent a great time discussing the Hop topic of the Dress Code. He explained that students designed the dress code and it was voted on in May of 2016. He explained that many perhaps think that our district spends too much time on dress, but it not the dress come, rather it is about the standard the district has put in place.
-He explained that the goal is to get out students to graduate and have a productive life.
Dr. Porterie then opened the floor up for questions. Many parents and community members asked an array of questions on topics such as on the dress code, AR points in the schools, traffic at the schools, need for more librarians, more bus drivers, etc.

Tomara Anderson, Kelly Services shared an announcement  with parents concerning the immediate need for Crossing Guards at the schools.
Port Arthur City Council President, Mrs. Germain Eddie shared multiple announcements with parents concerning upcoming parent opportunities and updates.
Community advocate and PTA member, Rev. Ellis Allen, shared information about a 'Fall Sweep Clean Up and Beautify the City' opportunity sponsored by the Port Arthur Beautification Commission. This event is scheduled for Saturday, October 19, 2019.
Mr. Ricardo Celis shared upcoming event and classes concerning the Multilingual Program
Light refreshments were served by Tawana Johnson, Aleen Brady, Elvira Narcisse, Carmen Hudson, Cheryl Tripplet and Kathy Londow.
Doorprizes were donated by Mrs. Elvira Narcisse and Tomara Anderson.

On June 20, 2019, parents were invited to receive updates concerning the 2019 PAISD Summer School Program during a working lunch at the Port Arthur Administration from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Mrs. Tracey Gabriel, who coordinated the Jumpstart, PK-2 program shared wonderful updates concerning what had been done and what would be done for the remainder of the summer program.  Mrs. Tamela Hebert, who served as the principal for Summer of Academic Refinement School (SOAR) at Tyrrell Elementary, shared a vast amount of information to parents concerning this program. She also shared sites where parents could go to see the progress of their children. Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Melvin Getwood, shared updates concerning the Secondary Summer School. He shared information concerning credits and how the students are working to ensure they obtain what is needed. He also shared the many opportunities that are available for students to achieve success.
The Port Arthur Children's Librarian, Mrs. Carolyn Thibodeaux, shared an amazing pictorial video of the many activities that have been going on at the library during the summer and showed how they are involving the students from the Port Arthur ISD.  She then brought in a special guest, Mr. Mickey Smith, Jr. to encourage the parents and community members. This young man is an educator, musician, author, public speaker and much more. He demonstrated how he learned to master playing the saxophone through diligence and hard work! He has written a book explaining this as well as encouraging others to reach their dreams.  
Dr. LaWanda Finney and Mr. Ricardo Celis gave parents/community an opportunity to add more information to the district policy which has been discussed throughout the entire school year. Parents were also given a survey shared by the Statewide Parent/Family Engagement Initiative on their website for parents to evaluate the Title 1 Program for the 2018-2019 School Year. Parents also had an opportunity to share input at the May PTA/Title 1 Joint Meeting and will have another opportunity to share information at the District's One Stop Registration which will be held July 24, 2019 at the Memorial 9th Grade Academy located at 3505 S/Sgt. Lucian Adams Dr. Port Arthur, TX 77642.
Many other upcoming activities were shared with parents at the meeting. For example, City Council of PTAs President, Mrs. Germain Eddie encouraged everyone to become a PTA member and shared the upcoming dates of the 2019-2020 PTA meetings and invited everyone to attend the sessions.
Mr. Ricardo Celis served also as the Spanish translator for the entire meeting. A light lunch was served by gracious hostesses (hard working central office employees), Tawana Johnson, Trisha Bush (both Federal Funding Dept.), Elvira Narcisse (retired), and Tammie Rose (Special Education Dept.)
Signatures of attendees were taken by Tamara Anderson (Kelley Services) and Gzele Clark (parent).
During the meeting, parents had an opportunity to also receive information from Reyna Burns and Amber Buchanan, who set up a table and shared information from Community Health Choice.
