Poverty Simulation April 10, 2015

 What is a Poverty Simulation?

THE SIMULATION EXPERIENCE

The poverty simulation experience is designed to help participants begin to understand

what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family trying to survive from month

to month. It is a simulation, not a game. The object is to sensitize participants to

the realities faced by low-income people.

It includes an introduction and briefing, the actual simulation exercise, and a debriefing period in which participants and volunteer staffers share their feelings and experiences and talk about

what they have learned about the lives of people in poverty.

[TAGTonDemand] Why G/T students should get more time to practice writing

Effective writing is one of the most essential skills to acquire for college bound students. This is especially true of gifted learners in AP Language programs.
And it’s even more important that they are able to write across content areas. Unfortunately, most students don’t get enough practice writing in other content areas.
As teachers we know that students are most responsive when we focus on topics that they are passionate about.
In this article, we’ll walk you through:
• How to create central themes and focal points
• Connecting the themes to student’s interests
• What bad writing practices to avoid
• Teaching how to limit or eliminate “stuff and fluff”
• How to provide structure without being formulaic
Students can be very passionate certain issues and when their work reflects this passion. We’ll provide you with a strategy that will stretch your students’ critical thinking skills by creating a twist to their passion.
