Your child will participate in the Accelerated Reader program. The Accelerated Reader program is a wonderful way for your student to practice his or her reading skills. Students will read a book from the library, then take a brief quiz using a computer. Students earn points by providing correct answers to these quizzes. The number of points a student must earn depends on the student’s grade level. You will be notified by your child’s teacher as to how many points he or she must earn. Throughout the school year MOTIVA Enterprises, our community sponsor, supports our reading program. MOTIVA Enterprises provides incentives to encourage student participation. In May, MOTIVA Enterprises will recognize those students who have earned the highest number of AR points for their grade level and the one Wilson student and the one Washington student who has earned the most AR points for the 07-08 school year. Reading is a skill. The more you do it, the better you become. The better you become the more enjoyable you will find it. To be successful in all subject areas: math, social studies, science, etc., a student must have good reading skills. It is very important that your child read as much as possible. Ask your child what they are reading. Make an outing to our Port Arthur Public Library. Subscribe to a newspaper or magazine, if possible. Let your child know that to be successful in any future endeavors, reading is the most important tool he or she can possess. “Teamwork makes the Dream work” and together we can make this an exemplary year for you and your child. |
