Course Overview or Objectives

 

Course Content:

Art is a comprehensive class that will include both two-dimensional and three-dimensional disciplines.

 

The scope of the lessons will be in direct alignment with the text, THE VISUAL EXPERIENCE, and supplemental resources which incorporate the four basic strands of   TEKS (117.52.Art, Grade9.).

Teacher Expectations

 

First Semester- Measuring Concepts/ Use of the Ruler. Students will learn the Elements of Art: line, shape, value, texture , space, form, and color.

Second Semester - Students will learn the Principles of Art:  rhythm, movement, balance, proportion, variety, emphasis, harmony, unity

 

The student will learn to compare and contrast the use of art elements and principles by creating artworks based on observations, personal experience, and imagination. The work needs to be the expressed ideas of the student and the work must be original artworks.

Sketchbooks Assignments - Are a method for students to formulate ideas, record events, be creative and express emotions. Weekly sketches drawn in an actual sketchbook will be required to be turned in each FRIDAY.

Art History Research- Idea Development- Observation Drawing- 6 week Cover Sheet

Students will use the web site www.artcyclopedia.com to research artists, periods, and works on this website. Students will be required to find other websites on their own. The use of technology is mandatory. Students will make informed judgments about personal artworks and the art works of others through art criticism. They will learn to understand art movements as they relate to history.

 

Writing – Students will be ask to express their ideas, draw conclusions, interpret meaning, and offer opinions, using good grammar and sentence structure.

Art History- Each six weeks the student will research an art period,  artist and artwork from that period and draw the work in proper format and give the credit line and 5 details about both artwork,  artist and pperiod.

Idea development- Student will draw the subject listed on syllabus

Observation- Student will draw the subject listed on syllabus

Six weeks coversheet-Students will use the art  period they researched and create a original work of art in that style

 

Measurement Concepts

Students will be expected to learn how to read a ruler and apply it to the aspects of creating and finishing a work of art. Students will be expected to learn scale and proportion through drawing and linear perspective.

 

Major Assignments

Assignments may include but are not limited to written reports, manipulative projects, (drawing, painting, design, printmaking, sculpture, textiles), art history, art criticism and outside participation, such as participation in art exhibits and museum visits.

 

Tests

One comprehensive text will be given during each six week grading period that may cover vocabulary words, methods and techniques and other pertinent information related to the material covered. All major tests will count as a major grade.

 

Daily Grade

 Everyone will begin with an average of 100 points. To maintain this average, the student must be present, participate and remain on task. Everyone is expected to remain actively engaged in their art assignment the entire class period and will be responsible for their individual work stations being left clean. At no time is student allowed to work on another subject area assignment.

 

Class Rules

 

Non-Negotiable Rules

 

1.  All students will be expected to follow the student Code of Conduct, District and School Policies. Policies and rules will be strictly adhered to. No exceptions!

 

2.  We celebrate cultural diversity therefore we will treat each other with dignity and respect.

 

3.  Students should come to class prepared everyday and be ready to participate.

 

4.  The bell does not dismiss you, the teacher does.

 

5.  Turn in work on time. Athletics or extra-curricular activities are not an excuse for not having your work.

 

6.  All re-testing and make up test will be done on the following Tuesday at 3:00 pm after the test day or absent day only. After school activities do not excuse the student from testing.

 

7.  It is the students’ responsibility to get make up work after class or after school

 

8.  You may not work on other subject areas assignments in art, it will be taken up.

 

9.  No electronic devices are allowed in class.

 

10. No eating or chewing gum in class. Food and drinks will be discarded in trash.

There will be a warning, then students will write an art research paper of 1000 words. Failure to write paper will result in a referral.

 

11. Personal work areas are to be left clean for the next class. It is a part of your grade!

 

12. Everyone is responsible for keeping the sink and counter area clean. It is a part of your grade!

A conduct grade of a U may only be given if there is documentation of parent notification of behavior concerns.

Standards for Mastery*

  1. Course assignments and unit evaluation shall be used to determine student grades in a subject. An average of 70 or higher shall be considered a passing grade.

  1. Mastery of the skills necessary for success at the next level shall be validated by assessments that may either be incorporated into unit or final exams or may be administered separately. Mastery of at least 70 percent of the objectives shall be required.

Promotion Policy*

Grade-level advancement for students in grades 9-12 shall be earned by course credits. Students may advance to the next grade level when the appropriate number of credits are earned as follows:

 

Sophomore (10th Grade)          5 credits

Junior (11th)                           11 credits

Senior (12th)                           18 credits

 

Graduation Requirements

 

Students must earn 25 specific credits as determined by their diploma choice and pass all TAKS exams in order to qualify for graduation.

 

Students not passing TAKS exams may be assigned to remediation classes as determined by the school district.

Make-Up Policy*

Students may make-up work, tests or assessments for excused absences upon returning to school. Students have up to 2 days for each excused absence to complete work missed upon returning to school after an excused absence.

 

It is the responsibility of the student and/or parent to request make-up work and submit to the teacher.  

 

Students will be allowed to make-up work for an unexcused absence but the grade earned shall be reduced by one letter grade and the work must be completed within one day.

 

Attendance Policy*

Students may not miss more than 9 unexcused absences for a semester course (e.g., American Government) or more than 18 days for a yearly course (e.g. English). A student may lose credit if they miss more than the 9 unexcused days per semester. Attendance Committee decisions may be appealed according policy FEA.

Reteach Policy*

To ensure that students master the material, reteaching may include, but shall not be limited to the following:

  1. The student may be required to correct or rework unsatisfactory assignments. In these circumstances, the grade earned shall replace the original grade.

  1. The student may be required to retake a major examination. In these circumstances, the grade earned shall replace the original grade.

  1. The teacher may require the student to attend a tutorial program or remedial or accelerated classes. When these are assigned, co-curricular or extracurricular activities shall not interfere with the requirement to attend the tutorial or assigned classes.

  1. The teacher may assign additional work on a particular unit or project for the student to complete.

  1. The teacher may work with small groups during class time while other students work independently.

 

Academic Dishonesty*

Students found to have engaged in academic dishonesty shall be

subject to grade penalties on assignments or tests and disciplinary

penalties in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. Academic dishonesty includes cheating or copying the work of another student, plagiarism, and unauthorized communication between students during an examination. The determination that a student has engaged in academic dishonesty shall be based on the judgment of the classroom teacher or another supervising professional employee, taking into consideration written materials, observation, or information from students.
