1.  WHAT IS A MAGNET PROGRAM ?

A magnet school opens doors of opportunity and sparks the imagination of students, preparing them to become responsible citizens in a global society.

 

 The Booker T. Washington Magnet

  • Enhances the Port Arthur ISD Standard Course of Study with innovative approaches to learning.

  • Has a theme-oriented approach that emphasizes an advanced program in Math, Science, Technology and Fine Arts, while providing distinct choices for students with different areas of interests.

  • Develops unique instructional practices and promotes cultural diversity.

  • Currently serves 2nd – 5th grade PAISD students.

 


 

2. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO ATTEND BOOKER T. WASHINGTON MAGNET?

There is no charge to attend the BTW Magnet. A participant must be a Port Arthur ISD student and meet program requirements.

 


 

3.  IS TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED?

Yes, transportation is provided in accordance with the PAISD Transportation guidelines.

 


 

4.  HOW ARE STUDENTS SELECTED?

Student selection is based on the careful review of the Magnet application and many sources of information including, but not limited to, current report card grades, previous years ITBS/TAKS scores, attendance data, disciplinary records, and teacher observations and perceptions.
 


 

5.  ARE UNIFORMS REQUIRED?

Yes, BTW Magnet students must adhere to the Port Arthur ISD dress code policy.

 


 

6. DO I HAVE TO APPLY EVERY YEAR?

Once a student is accepted, as long as he/she continues to meet participation criteria, he/she will continue with the Magnet program from year to year.  However, all participants are subject to an end of year review by a review committee. Parents will be notified if the student’s status changes.

 


 

7. ARE THE MAGNET PROGRAM APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE IN SPANISH?

Yes, the elementary magnet program enrollment application is available in Spanish and Vietnamese.

 

 


 

8. How does the BTW Magnet Program Application Process WORK?

Enrollment for the 2010-2011 school year is now open.

The application window is open until filled.

Submit the application online by clicking here OR bring or mail a paper copy  to the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, 733 5th Street, Port Arthur, Texas 77640. 

 

The BTW Magnet Review Committee will attach students’ records to the application. Admission is based upon above average academic achievement, citizenship, and the degree of parental involvement.

 

The BTW Magnet Review Committee will notify parents of student’s acceptance or non-acceptance into the program. Parents who accept must return the acceptance document (Agreement Form) as specified. Do not withdraw your child from his or her home school.

       


 

9. Can the application be denied due to incomplete information?

All applications will be processed. Please complete all required fields for faster processing.

 


 

10.  IF MY CHILD IS ACCEPTED INTO THE MAGNET PROGRAM AFTER BEING REGISTERED AT THE HOME SCHOOL, DO I NEED TO GO TO THE HOME SCHOOL, WITHDRAW MY CHILD, AND PICK UP HIS RECORDS ?

No, upon acceptance to the BTW Magnet Program, the sending school will be notified and the student’s records and registration will be forwarded to the Magnet Program.

 


 

11.  DOES THE YOUNGER SIBLING OF A STUDENT ACCEPTED INTO THE Magnet program HAVE TO APPLY TO THE MAGNET PROGRAM FOR ACCEPTANCE?

All students must apply and meet program requirements to be accepted. Acceptance also depends on space available.

 


 

12.  MAY I FAX MY APPLICATION?

13.  WHAT IF I MOVED TO PAISD AFTER SCHOOL STARTS?

Parents/Guardians of students who are new residents of PAISD and who enrolled after school starts  may submit an application. However, program requirements must be met and acceptance depends upon the availability of Magnet slots.

 


 

14.  HOW ARE THE PROGRAM SEATS FILLED ON THE WAIT LIST?  

Slots will be filled on a first come first serve basis at each grade level, based upon the application submission date.
